This post describes “Operating time”, “Bounce time”, “Return time”, “Chattering” and “Surge” of relays.
Relays are commonly used components in embedded products. Relay “Operating time”, “Bounce time”, “Return time”, “Chattering” and “Surge” are characteristics that software engineers should also know about.
Operating time | Figure (1) Time from relay energization to contact ON/OFF start. |
Bounce time | Repeat contact ON/OFF as shown in the figure (2) Time until the contact becomes fixed ON |
Return time | Figure (3) Time from relay de-energization to contact turn-off |
Chattering | Repeated contact ON/OFF state for bounce time |
Surge | Surge voltage generated when relay is OFF (coil de-energized) |
